Shaping Montclair’s Global Vision: Innovation & Collaboration

On May 13, 2025 the International Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, held a half-day campus event dedicated to advancing the university’s internationalization efforts, inviting faculty, staff, and key community stakeholders.

Summary

Featuring a keynote address by Dr. Harvey Charles, a leading expert in international education and global engagement, the hands-on event explored and helped advance Montclair’s strategies for fostering a more globally connected academic environment through intentional institutional policies in which faculty, students and other internationalization stakeholders play a central role. Dr. Charles shared insights from his extensive experience in international higher education leadership, addressing the evolving landscape of global engagement and the challenges and opportunities it presents for institutions like Montclair. By bringing together diverse voices from across the institution, the event helped the International Advising Committee, the Office of the Provost and other campus actors in shaping a forward-looking internationalization strategy that reflects Montclair’s dedication to academic excellence and inclusivity while enhancing the institution’s global impact and footprint.

The event featured breakout sessions that facilitated in-depth discussions on faculty development, student mobility, and the establishment of sustainable international partnerships. Participants engaged in collaborative dialogue on best practices, innovative approaches, and actionable strategies for enhancing Montclair’s global footprint. The event concluded with a networking luncheon that helped foster meaningful connections among attendees while reinforcing the university’s commitment to international collaboration.

Keynote Speaker Bio

Dr. Harvey Charles has enjoyed a lengthy career at multiple institutions around the US as Chief International Officer and Professor of International Education, having been affiliated most recently with the University of Minnesota and the University at Albany, SUNY. Charles’ contribution to the field of international education includes serving as President of the Association of International Education Administrators, the principal association worldwide for university leaders of international higher education. He is also co-editor of two volumes including Leading Internationalization and the Handbook of International Higher Education. Apart from his deep administrative experience, Charles has published on issues including leadership in international higher education, global learning, internationalizing the curriculum and comprehensive internationalization. He serves on a number of boards in the US and abroad, frequently consults with colleges and universities seeking to advance the internationalization agenda, gives keynote addresses on international education issues, and mentors a number of young professionals in the field.
