Winter Session Best Practices Workshops

The Winter Session Office, in partnership with the ITDS team, will offer a full day of virtual workshops through Zoom. Workshop participants will receive resources in Canvas.

9:30-10:45am Faculty Show and Tell Led by Experienced Winter Instructors   

In this session, experienced Winter session instructors will share their approaches to adapting courses to this condensed/accelerated format, and best practices from their prior winter session teaching experiences.

11:00-11:45am Canvas Advanced Tips and Tricks    

Whether you are new to Canvas or not, there may be tricks that you were unaware of or possibilities in teaching your course that you have not considered. This presentation will showcase some of the features within Canvas that can take your Canvas skills to the next level.

12:00-1:00pm Break / Virtual Drop In Support on Canvas and Course Design   
1:00:1:45pm Student Engagement Strategies for Online Teaching and Learning   

How can we engage students in an online environment? In this workshop, we will discuss some active learning strategies and collaborative learning tools to promote student engagement in an online asynchronous or synchronous environment.

2:00-2:45pm Designing Authentic Student Assessments Online

What are some of the ways we can build interesting and engaging assessments? In this workshop, we will discuss the benefits of designing authentic assessments, tools that we can allow students to use to demonstrate their understanding of the content we teach (outside of the typical quiz or paper), and ways we can develop rubrics that can aid us in communicating our grading expectations.

3:00-3:45 Using Panopto to Create DIY Videos for Courses

Create videos using Panopto which is an easy to use video platform which provides screencasting, lecture capture, live streaming, and video content management. In this workshop you will learn how to use Panopto and get tips on what to be mindful of when creating content for your courses. Whether you are on camera or just recording a screencast, learning tips to improve your on camera presence and utilizing the features that Panopto offers will help you create more engaging videos for your courses.
