Montclair State University (Montclair) seeks a visionary, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as its new Vice Provost for International Academic Initiatives and Chief Global Engagement Officer (VPIAI). Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, this vice provost role will guide the University’s global strategy, advance its internationalization efforts, and oversee a broad and integrated portfolio of global academic initiatives and partnerships.
As Montclair’s senior international officer, the VPIAI will provide strategic direction for the University’s global engagement, developing and implementing its international plan and business model to ensure long-term growth and sustainability of its global programs. This leader will strengthen and steward high-impact international partnerships; oversee international student and scholar services; support global marketing and international student recruitment; and advance university internationalization. In addition, the VPIAI will be responsible for several functional areas, including global operations, compliance, and fundraising for global academic initiatives. The portfolio also includes oversight of global mobility programs such as study abroad and away, faculty-led courses, and Fulbright activities.
To be successful, the VPIAI must be globally experienced, culturally adept, and knowledgeable about international education trends and operational models. This role requires a leader who is an excellent administrator, a collaborative partner, an inclusive team leader, and an eloquent advocate for global engagement.
Candidates should have substantial senior-level experience leading internationalization efforts in higher education, including at least eight years of progressive responsibility in international education. They must demonstrate a strong understanding of international education best practices, a record of advancing institution-wide strategies, and experience managing agreements, mobility and exchange programs, and grants.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and organizational skills. Knowledge of international higher education organizations, regulatory and compliance requirements, and the capacity to influence senior institutional leaders is highly valued. Preferred qualifications include proficiency in a second language, senior international leadership experience at a similarly complex university, and an earned doctoral degree.

A pay range of $240,000 – $260,000 per year reflects what Montclair reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
