Stay Busy Over Break

During the winter break you could binge on your favorite Netflix series or catch up on some much needed sleep. But remember, it’s also a great time to be productive in your career development! Here are some ways to stay active during break:

Gain Real-World Experience

Many employers are looking for seasonal help. Seasonal jobs and volunteer work allow you to learn new skills, gain valuable professional experience, network with potential employers and boost your resume, while still affording you a flexible schedule.

If someone is looking for a gift idea for you, why not ask for items that will help you look and feel professional and organized during your job search process? Here are a few ideas for gifts that help you invest in your future:

Set Aside a Little YOU Time

Discover your strengths, explore your interests and decide what’s important to you.

Career Services offers Self-Assessment Tools to help you set your long and short-term career goals. Winter break is a good time to take an assessment. When you return to campus, make sure to set up an appointment with your Career Advisor to review your results.

Reflect on Your 2018 Accomplishments

You’ve worked hard this past year; make sure that is reflected on your resume and public professional profiles! Add any new activities and experiences as well as skills and competencies you have gained or strengthened. Include relevant coursework and update your GPA!

Spend Time with Family and Friends

If you plan to attend holiday parties or visit friends, don’t be afraid to ask questions about getting started in your career. Ask your immediate network about contacts they can recommend reaching out to for Informational Interviews or job shadowing.

Remember, your network is bigger than you think! Talk to colleagues, neighbors, family friends, relatives and use free resources, such as LinkedIn’s Alumni Tool, to connect with Montclair State alumni in your field of interest!
