Hypothes.is is a collaborative web annotation tool that allows users to annotate digital text like websites, pdfs, EPUBS, and more. It also allows users to make private notes and public comments, as well as form reading groups and have discussions in those reading groups. Collaborative annotation engages students more deeply in course readings and gives teachers a view into how students are reading – making reading visible, active, and social.

Faculty members have access to Hypothesis as an external tool in Canvas, and Hypothesis can be added as an (ungraded) external tool item in a module or as an external tool assignment. This integration with Canvas takes care of all Hypothesis account provisioning for faculty and students.
