‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌Jason Dickinson (Robert D. McCormick Center for Child Advocacy and Policy, CHSS) received $246,238 from the NJ Department of Children and Families for “Post BA Certificate in Adolescent Advocacy 2015–2016.” The program, which was the result of a collaboration between Montclair State University and the Department of Children and Families (DCF), has been designed to provide Child Protection and Permanency workers (CP&P) (Formerly The Division of Youth and Family Services DYFS) and DCF workers who wish to further their expertise in working with adolescents in the public welfare system with a multidisciplinary understanding of the role of the child advocate as seen through the disciplines of law, psychology, and social work among others. Students gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work effectively with the adolescent population.

Andrada Ivanescu (Mathematical Sciences, CSAM) received a $10,957 subcontract from Johns Hopkins University for “Child Growth Curve Modeling.” Dr. Ivanescu collaborated with the Biostatistics Department research group on using statistical methods for modeling child growth.

Christopher Matthews and Katherine McCaffrey (Anthropology, CHSS) received a $26,096 subaward from ValleyArts for the ArtPlace America-funded “Unearthing the Future: the Art of Reverse Archaeology – Interstate 280 in Orange, NJ.” The project will uncover lost knowledge about the City of Orange, and the City of Orange and ValleyArts will link that knowledge to a new counter-narrative for Orange through a series of arts interventions.

Robert Reid and Pauline Garcia-Reid (Family and Child Studies, CEHS) were awarded $283,875–the first year of a five-year award–by the US Department of Health and Human Services/SAMHSA for “Project C.O.P.E.,” which will work to prevent substance abuse and the spread of HIV among African American and Latino youth in Paterson, NJ.

The US Department of Education awarded $1,181,143 to Jennifer Robinson (Center of Pedagogy, CEHS) and Susan Wray (Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education, CEHS) for the second year of a $6.2 million project called “Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency.” This program, in partnership with the Newark Public Schools (NPS), seeks to improve student achievement by applying rigorous research-based teacher preparation to the concrete needs of the NPS. NMUTR is designed to recruit effective individuals, including minorities and individuals from other occupations, into the teaching force; improve the quality of both new and prospective teachers; increase teacher retention rates; and ultimately improve student achievement.
