Dr. Charlotte Kent joined the Department of Art and Design this Fall as a Visual Culture Historian.

Self-proclaimed, “theory geek,” Dr. Kent brings with her extensive research on how mass media rhetoric cultivates ways of seeing. She is currently working on the Curriculum Committee, overseeing the smooth transition and assessment of the Department of Art and Design’s contemporary and interdisciplinary-focused undergraduate curriculum; as well as assisting in the development of a new MFA program in Creative Innovation and Technology. Kent says, “I believe in helping students discover not only what things mean but how they mean, enabling them to produce clear, thoughtful ideas through their own writing and visual designs.”

Dr. Kent’s dissertation, “If You See Something, Say Something: A Look at Experiments in Art Writing” connected how we discuss art to expectations for social engagement. The interdisciplinary nature of Dr. Kent’s work led her to research at the Tate Modern, work with galleries and artists in New York City, and dive into art history, aesthetics, the psycho-pathology of attention, and of course literature.

In her free time, Dr. Kent enjoys drinking tea, dancing, spending time with her senior pit bull rescue and contemplating that we live in such a world where her dog has quite the Instagram following.
