Visual Arts – Art Education

Our Art Education programs are driven by new approaches to art and education and innovative ways to work, create and respond to today’s social and cultural art educational challenges.

We are dedicated to the development of leaders in P-12 schools, museums and other community settings. Through four distinct program options, both undergraduate and graduate students develop knowledge, skills and dispositions across disciplines and methodologies that enhance their leadership capacities, local and global understandings, and professional artistic practices to address authentic challenges in 21st century aesthetic, social and relational living.

Pursue one of the following options in art education:
  1. Visual Arts Major with a concentration in Art Education with Teacher Certification (P-12) – BA
  2. Visual Arts Major with Teacher Certification in Art (P-12) & Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certification Education – combine BA/MAT
  3. Visual Arts Major with a concentration in School and Community Settings – BA


Visual Arts Major with a concentration in Art Education with Teacher Certification (P-12) – BA

A professional-degree option within Montclair State’s Teacher Education program, this concentration qualifies students for the initial certificate to teach art in grades P-12 in New Jersey’s public and private schools, as well as elsewhere in the country. The certificate also qualifies you to teach in settings that include museums, cultural centers and community organizations.

After completing foundation art and design courses and fulfilling the university’s general education requirements, you must apply to, and be accepted by, Montclair State University’s Center of Pedagogy. Successful candidates then pursue intensive coursework in education and hands-on student teaching experiences.  A total of 129-147 credits is required to graduate in this major. Visual Arts/MAT with Teacher Certification in Art (Preschool- Grade 12) & Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certification (Preschool-Grade 12) – Combined BA/MAT           

This combined BA and MAT program prepares students to become art teachers as they earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree within a condensed timeframe. The program focuses on the critical study of best practices in art education and teaching students in P-12 school settings. You will complete rigorous coursework in pre-professional undergraduate art and education courses, followed by professional level graduate courses, clinical experience and student teaching. This program confers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with graduates eligible for a dual New Jersey initial teacher certificate in P-12 Art Education and certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.

Visual Arts with a concentration in School and Community Settings (No Teacher Certification)

This concentration is designed for art students who would like to be prepared to work in public-service organizations such as museums, hospitals and other community settings that do not require state certification or licensure. This pre-professional degree option does not issue licenses, registrations or certifications when the program is completed. You may elect pre-professional study in one or more clusters, including:

  • Art Therapy – Recommended for students wishing to become art therapists and who plan to pursue graduate study and licensure in the discipline. Focusing on the healing potential of creative expression and art making, art therapists work with people recovering from physical illness, depression or trauma in settings that include clinics, hospitals, social-service agencies, community centers, nursing homes, and adult day-care centers.
  • Museums and Galleries – Recommended for students who wish to become administrators in an art exhibition setting and who plan to pursue a graduate degree in museum or arts management, business, communication, or related areas. Coursework covers organizational development, funding, programming, and practices of museums and galleries, as well as the roles arts institutions have played in the past and will continue to play in the future. Students are required to complete a range of recommended electives or complete a minor in a related area such as Business, Communication Studies, Economics, History, Latin American and Latino Studies, Religious Studies, or Anthropology.
  • Community Settings – Recommended for students wishing to work collaboratively with community groups, organizations, and government agencies as event organizers, teachers or programmers. Graduates find work in such fields as urban planning, event marketing, environmental justice, public health, or business economics. This cluster curriculum teaches students about the management, promotion, and funding of community arts projects. Students may also complete a range of recommended electives or complete a minor in a related area such as Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Gerontology, Public Administration, or Urban Studies.

Each cluster provides an introduction to the goals and practices of visual arts professionals working in cultural or community-based fields. Graduates are well positioned for post-graduate study and/or entry-level work in non-certification professions and activities such as museum management, art therapy, community center administration, event planning, mural making and/or arts lobbying.

What You Will Study

We believe that teaching you to develop your thinking and making skills as an artist is essential to your ability to effectively work with clients and others in community settings, and students in Preschool-12 classrooms. Our Arts Education programs prepare you to be an artist who works in community settings or in school classrooms.

Prospective students matriculate first into the concentration in School and Community Settings, where they follow foundational art and general education curriculum.

In the spring semester of your sophomore year, you may opt to stay in the School and Community Settings Concentration, or elect to pursue one of the other options in Art Education.

Please note that while most courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters, a limited number of courses are also available during the summer session.

Our Faculty

More than 28 full-time faculty members and 90 adjuncts and visiting professionals, including renowned guest artists and art critics, mentor Art and Design students each semester. They foster students’ development as artists while providing invaluable insights into arts-related professions. In addition to studying with Art and Design faculty, Art Education students are mentored by professors in the College of Education and Human Services.

About Studio Facilities

The Department of Art and Design occupies several on-campus buildings, which house fully equipped studios for all art areas. Outside of the department, Art Education majors take education classes in University Hall, Montclair State’s largest and recently constructed academic facility.

Accreditation

Montclair State University’s Art and Design programs are among the region’s most competitive and meet the rigorous standards of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD). Our FAED and FABM Art Education concentrations are accredited by both NASAD and by the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP, formerly NCATE).
