Celebrating Dr. Charlotte Kent’s Recent Accomplishments

The Department of Art and Design proudly celebrates Dr. Charlotte Kent, whose recent achievements highlight her expertise and thought leadership in contemporary art, intellectual property, and cultural criticism. Dr. Kent has become a distinguished voice in addressing some of today’s most pressing issues within the art world.

College Art Association Appointment

Dr. Kent has been invited to join the College Art Association’s (CAA) Intellectual Property Committee. The committee addresses key concerns facing artists and scholars today, from copyright to the ethical implications of digital replication in the arts. Dr. Kent’s experience with contemporary digital practices and her scholarly approach make her an invaluable addition to the committee.

New Book Release: Contemporary Absurdities, Existential Crises, and Visual Art

Most recently, Dr. Kent co-edited a collection of essays titled Contemporary Absurdities, Existential Crises, and Visual Art. The book brings together essays and artworks that explores the absurd as both a reflection of and response to contemporary crises, using art and theory to challenge dominant beliefs and expose the instability of modern structures. This collection presents absurdity as a lens and a radical tool that questions hegemonic systems, offering critical insight into the pervasive disorientation of our times.

Featured Speaker at the Victoria and Albert Museum

Dr. Charlotte Kent was recently invited to speak at London’s renowned Victoria and Albert Museum for FEMG3N: Expanding the Art World with New Digital Practices, where she led a conversation with artists Licia He and Anna Ridler on the transformative role of generative art. Bringing her deep expertise to the discussion, Dr. Kent was joined by Le Random editor-in-chief Peter Bauman and V&A curator Melanie Lenz, highlighting the significant contributions of women in redefining the digital art landscape.

Recipient of the another Google AMI Grant

Dr. Charlotte Kent recently received another Google Artist and Machine Intelligence (AMI) Grant for her project Absurd Models: Rethinking a Crisis of Values, awarded $20,000 to explore how art can help us navigate the present and envision collective futures with AI. This grant supports her research on the societal impacts of machine learning within visual arts and design.

Recent Publications in Art Forum and Art News

Dr. Kent has recently made notable contributions to prominent art publications. This past summer she wrote for Art Forum, where her article Museums and Protests critically examines the cultural implications of attacks on museums. In Art News, her book review titled In Token Supremacy, Zachary Small Presents a Sensationalized Version of the NFT Boom delivers an unsparing critique of NFTs, challenging the prevailing narratives around digital art supremacy.

Contribution to Midnight Moment: A Decade of Artists in Times Square

Dr. Charlotte Kent’s writing will also be featured in the upcoming book Midnight Moment: A Decade of Artists in Times Square, published in collaboration with Times Square Arts. This first and only book on Times Square’s iconic Midnight Moment series—the world’s largest and longest-running digital public art program—celebrates the artistic initiatives that have transformed Times Square into a renowned public art site, with contributions from figures including Jean Cooney and Dr. Kent.
