It is the student's responsibility to complete the curriculum prescribed in the University catalog in effect, or as modified, when he/she matriculates. Students who will be completing their curriculum requirements for degrees, teacher certification, or Post Baccalaureate certificates must complete the Application to Graduate through their NEST account in order to be evaluated for completion of requirements and subsequently become eligible for degree conferment, certificate or recommendation for teacher certification.

Graduation Application Deadlines

  • October 1 for the following January graduation 
  • December 1 for the following May graduation 
  • May 1 for the following August graduation

You will receive an email at your Montclair State University email address prior to your final term. This email will direct you to review the "Notes" and the "Saved" audit to be found in your Degreeworks audit available through NEST

If you change your mind and wish to re-file for a subsequent term, please email You will be notified when you can re-enter the application and file for the next term.

Certification (State of New Jersey)

Baccalaureate and Master's degree candidates, as well as Post Baccalaureate Certificate candidates, who have been evaluated through the Office of the Registrar for New Jersey teaching, educational services, or administrative certificates must complete the Educational Credential Application and pay the required fees by the deadline indicated on the application.
All degree/certification requirements must be met before your application is sent to the NJ Department of Education.
Application forms will be mailed to candidates approximately four weeks prior to the deadline. Completed applications MUST BE NOTARIZED and returned with payment to:  Office of the Registrar, Montclair State University, 1 Normal Ave, Montclair, NJ 07043.
Certification fees range from $95 to $190 per certificate. More information is available on the NJ Teacher Education web site at:

Applications are sent approximately four weeks after the degree conferment dates shown below.  
  • Fall - January 31st
  • Spring - May 31st
  • Summer - August 31st


Commencement exercises are held each year for students.  In order to participate in Commencement, a student must have completed all degree requirements before the degree conferral date. Candidates who are either removed from the May graduation list or re-file for a subsequent degree conferral date will be eligible to participate in Commencement the following January or May depending on completion of requirements. Students should file for final audit by January 1 for May graduation, November 1 for January graduation, or May 1 if the degree is to be completed in August.  Please visit the commencement Frequently Asked Questions page for a listing of important questions you may have.

Diploma/University Certificate

Available approximately two weeks after date of conferment for those students who have completed all requirements for graduation. 
Diplomas and University Certificates will be mailed directly from the diploma company to those students who have no outstanding financial obligations approximately two weeks after your conferment date. You may track your Diploma/University Certificate order by accessing Covers for diplomas will be available at the University Bookstore in May when picking up caps and gowns. Diploma covers will also be available in the Office of the Registrar.

Transcripts With Program Completion Information

Available approximately two weeks after conferment date.
Students who wish to have official transcripts of their records sent must complete a Transcript Request Form. Official transcripts may be requested online via WESS. Once you have logged in to WESS, under the Student Records heading select Official Transcript Request and follow the instructions. The transcript request form can also be printed from the MSU website, or obtained at the Office of the Registrar. The completed form may be submitted by mail, by fax, or in person. Indicate “HOLD UNTIL DEGREE CONFERRED” on the form. Transcripts will not be released for students who have outstanding financial obligations.

Before that date, if you need a Statement of Completion of Degree/Certification/University Certificate requirements to show for employment, examination, or graduate school purposes other than MSU, you may fill out a request form. This form is available on our website at or in the Office of the Registrar.

Once degree/N.J. Certification/University Certificate completion information has been posted to the record, the statement of completion will no longer be obtainable; instead, an official transcript must be requested.
