Medical and Dental Pathways
Interested in becoming a doctor or dentist? Montclair offers several pathways for exploring a medical career while completing your undergraduate degree, or enrolling in a combined program with a direct admission process to Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
Options for Every Ambition
Whether you want to complete your undergraduate degree before applying to a dream medical program, or are looking to create a seamless path to a medical program with one of our partner institutions, we’ve got options for you.
Become a competitive applicant for your dream medical school. Our Pre-Medical Program can set you on the right path for a future in a medical, dental or health field. Through personalized coaching and support, you’ll develop a strong foundation for the MCAT, DAT or GRE while completing the requirements for your undergraduate program.
Through articulation agreements with partner medical and dental schools, Montclair also offers students structured pathways to pursue undergraduate study alongside preparation for professional programs. These combined programs provide a clear course of study and defined admission pathways, helping qualified students plan for careers in medicine and dentistry from the start of their undergraduate experience. Currently offered programs include:
- Combined BS/MD Program (8-Year)
- Combined BS/DMD Program (7-Year)
- BS/PharmD Doctor of Pharmacy Program with Rutgers University
Pre-Medical Program
As a Pre-Medical Program student, you’ll take part in exciting and valuable experiences each semester, including conversations with medical professionals, visits to health-care facilities, and study strategy and career workshops. All the while, you’ll be developing vital professional skills that will support your future in a health-care career.
You can be part of the Pre-Medical Program no matter what your major is, but students interested in medical careers should take coursework aligned with the natural and behavioral sciences. These courses will prepare you for the MCAT and DAT, and are required by many medical and health profession schools.
Combined BS/MD Program (8-Year)
Through our partnership with Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (R-NJMS), we offer a seamless Eight-Year Combined BS/MD Program that secures your path from undergrad straight to medical school. You will complete four years of full-time study at Montclair (majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology) before transitioning to R-NJMS to earn your Doctor of Medicine.
BS/PharmD Doctor of Pharmacy Program
This joint program permits students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Montclair State University and a PharmD degree from Rutgers University in 7 years. At Montclair, students major in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or biology and earn approximately 100 credits in three years. Students transfer to Rutgers (New Brunswick) in their fourth year to begin the pharmacy curriculum. Approximately 20 credits from this curriculum are transferred to Montclair to complete BS degree requirements.
Combined BS/DMD Program (7-Year)
Montclair State University partners with Rutgers School of Dental Medicine to offer an accelerated, 7-year program for highly qualified students. Program graduates earn their bachelor’s degree in three years studying at Montclair, and their Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) following four years of study at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
Health Careers Program for NJ Residents
New Jersey students from financially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds are invited to explore the Health Careers Program, which provides added support and resources to those interested in pursuing a health profession, and/or are enrolled in the Pre-Medical program or the Combined BS/MD Program (Eight-Year).
