If you want to develop truly immersive experiences that move the needle, then Montclair’s Animation and Visual Effects program is for you.

You’ll utilize our state-of-the-art facilities and hone your skills in 2D and 3D animation, game development, immersive storytelling and visual effects, and create work that you’ll be able to show in your first interview for that killer internship or first job. You’ll also have access to the bright lights of New York and some of the biggest companies in the world, sitting just 12 miles away.

Our world-class faculty will help you harness your talent and creativity and turn it into jaw-dropping animation and eye-popping effects.

Additional Admissions Requirements

Your portfolio should contain the following if you’d like to apply to the Animation and Visual Effects program:

  1. Cover Letter (1-page maximum) You’ll write a single-page, professionally formatted cover letter stating your interest in studying animation and visual effects and include your future professional aspirations.
  2. Your Best WorkInclude 15 – 20 images of your strongest artwork.We are looking for originality, consistency, presentation, drawing skills, computer skills, composition and design, use of color, ability to communicate concepts, quality of sketchbook and your enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing this field. Images should be clearly labeled, oriented correctly, and professionally presented within the application. Clearly label each submitted portfolio artwork with the following:

    • Title of artwork
    • Year the artwork was created
    • If collaborative – what your involvement was in the project
    • Medium produced in (traditional, digital, hybrid, other) Software used if applicable

    Observational Drawing – Digital or traditional artwork: One of your entries must be an observational drawing. Observational drawing is drawing something by looking at it, not drawing from a photo. It can be anything as long as it’s from observation of a real-life subject. An example confirms that you can identify lines, curves, edges, perspective, proportion, hues and values and translate them into drawings.

  3. Letters of Recommendation Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with your work and interests. At least one reference should be from a teacher.
