Political Communication

Effective communication is at the heart of politics, shaping public opinion, influencing policy and driving social change. If you have an interest in politics and want to better understand the role that communication plays in all political processes, you may want to consider a minor in Political Communication.

The minor is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that blends political science, media studies and communication strategies to give you a solid foundation in political communication. In addition to learning the basics like key terms, foundational concepts and theories of political communication, you will acquire a framework for understanding and analyzing how political communication shapes expectations and interpretations of political actors, the campaign process, and democratic institutions.

Open to students of any major, the 18-credit minor combines required introductory courses in political communication, American government and politics, and research methods, with elective courses and an outside-of-the-classroom learning experience. With required prerequisite courses satisfied and departmental approval, you may undertake a supervised employment experience, or even an internship in Washington, D.C.
