Snow Removal Assistant Frequently Asked Questions:

Are these positions Federal Work Study or Student Assistant positions?
These are Student Assistant positions.

How long are these positions available?
We can always use more help and will accept new employees throughout the winter season. If you know of a fellow student who is interested, they can send an email to snow-work@mail.montclair.edu and they will be contacted regarding hiring procedures.

What are the job duties?
Duties include shoveling and salting the sidewalks and staircases on campus.

Is prior experience required?
Prior experience is helpful, but not required. You will be trained before you are given a work assignment.

What is the pay rate?
$12 per hour.

What are the hours?
Work schedules will vary with winter storms. Snow & ice removal may be required overnight, in the early morning and on weekends.
You will be asked to provide us with the hours that you are available and we will contact you based on what you provide. For instance, if you say that you can only work during the day, you will not be called for overnight work.

How many hours can I work?
Please keep in mind that student employees are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week. If you have another job on campus, you must take into consideration the hours worked at your other job.
If you are not attending classes during Winter Break, you may work up to 35 hours per week during that time period.

Are uniforms provided?
You may wear your own clothing. Appropriate winter weather outerwear (hats, gloves, boots, winter coats, etc.) are recommended. For safety purposes, you will be provided with a slicker suit that has reflective material on it (see example). These suits are mandatory while you are on duty.

What do I do when I receive the call to come in and work?
You must call the supervisor who contacted you and let them know if you can or cannot come in to work.  Snow removal is of critical importance; if you indicate that you will be reporting to work, we have every expectation that you will be there.

Are these jobs only open to students or can others also apply?
The ad we sent out was directed to students only, however, we will be hiring part-time workers as well. If you know a non-MSU person who is interested in work, please refer them to our Human Resources online job board at https://oit-app2.montclair.edu/xf/hr_jobpostings/
