Biography
I teach many different courses in the English Department, many of them in my areas of specialization, which are English-language modernism -- British, Irish, and American -- and satire. But I also enjoy teaching introductory courses such as the departmental survey of British Literature after 1660, or "Utopian and Dystopian Fiction." I've written two books on satire: Modernism, Satire, and The Novel (2011), and The Cambridge Introduction to Satire (2019). I've co-edited a journal issue on Darwin and Literary Studies and a collection of essays on Aldous Huxley. Currently I am preparing a new edition of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four for Broadview Press. I also recently published two trade books co-written with CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Mo Rocca, Mobituaries (2019) and Roctogenarians (2024) that blend history, humor, and cultural analysis.
