Biography

Dr. Thomas D’Elia is an Assistant Superintendent and adjunct faculty member in the Educational Leadership program at Montclair State University. With experience spanning classroom instruction, building leadership, and central office administration, his work focuses on developing effective school systems, supporting educator growth, and preparing future leaders for the realities of modern education.

Leadership Experience
Dr. D’Elia currently serves as Assistant Superintendent, where he oversees districtwide initiatives in curriculum, personnel, and organizational development. His leadership experience includes roles as Director of Human Resources, Director of Operations/Chief Talent Officer, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Principal, High School Assistant Principal, Director of Safety, and Director of Athletics/Physical Education. Across these roles, he has led efforts in staff development, strategic planning, and systems-level improvement.

Teaching and Coaching Background
Dr. D’Elia began his career as a middle school teacher, instructing Math, Science, and Social Studies. He later earned certification in Special Education, strengthening his ability to support diverse learners. In addition to his classroom work, he coached Wrestling and Spring Track and Field.

Education and Credentials
Dr. D’Elia earned his Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Teacher Development from Montclair State University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Kean University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Saint Peter's University.

He holds New Jersey certifications as a School Administrator, Principal, Supervisor, and teacher in both general and special education.

His professional learning includes advanced study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he earned a Certificate in Advanced Educational Leadership, as well as professional certificates through Columbia University Teachers College.

Professional Contributions
A public speaker and educational consultant, Dr. D’Elia has delivered presentations on curriculum design, digital and cloud-based learning, data-informed instruction, and staff development. His work often centers on practical strategies for recruiting, supporting, and retaining high-quality educators. He also serves as a mentor to aspiring administrators across New Jersey through the Leaders to Leaders program.

Service and Engagement
In addition to his district leadership, Dr. D’Elia serves as an elected member of a local board of education, contributing to policy development and community engagement efforts. He is also a Leadership Associate with Montclair State University’s Network for Educational Renewal, supporting partnerships between schools and higher education.

Teaching Philosophy
Dr. D’Elia approaches teaching with a strong belief that effective leadership is grounded in practice. His courses emphasize real-world application, reflective thinking, and the development of practical skills that future administrators can immediately apply in their schools.

He places a strong value on interpersonal relationships, recognizing that leadership is ultimately about people. This perspective is rooted not only in his professional experiences, but also in his deep appreciation for family, which continues to shape his commitment to supporting others with authenticity, respect, and purpose.
