Yasemin Besen-Cassino

Biography

I am a Professor of Sociology and University Distinguished Scholar(2013). I am also Doctoral Faculty in the Environmental Science and Management Program. I received the Dean's Award in Scholarship in 2018. I served as the Editor of Contemporary Sociology, a flagship journal of the American Sociological Association (2019-2025). I served as the Book Review Editor of Gender & Society(2014-2018) and the Managing Editor of Men & Masculinities (2003-2005). My research focuses on sociology of labor, organizations, work and gender. My work has appeared in many interdisciplinary journals such as Sociological Forum, Contexts, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Theory& Society, NWSAJ and Education& Society and has been featured in many popular venues such as the Washington Post,The Guardian, The Atlantic, Newsweek, CNN, MTV, Fortune, GQ, Daily Mail and Ms. magazine among many others. My work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, American Association of University Women(AAUW) as well as the W.E. Upjohn Foundation.

In addition to research, I truly enjoy teaching. I was awarded the Dean's Award in Teaching at Montclair State University and the Dean's Award in Teaching at SUNY Stony Brook. I also received the Carla Howery Award from the American Sociological Association.
