Showcase: Weekly “Hook” Video

In BUGN280: Strategic Business Communications, Professor Yosh uses a brief “hook” video to introduce a key concept – credibility – as an essential quality in any profession. In this brief recording (approximately 1 minute), Professor Yosh asks viewers to consider how we cultivate credibility. Using this and other probing questions, Professor Yosh introduces students to some key topics of her Strategic Business Communications course. A short engaging video can give students a good overview of weekly topics and how they might approach the material. In an asynchronous online course, a brief video can also introduce students to the instructor and create the requisite online faculty presence.

A “hook” video is a great way to introduce students to the weekly topics. The idea is to focus on one key element or concept as a way to engage students. It doesn’t have to be about the entire module, it is just one important concept that you feel is significant enough to make them interested in the topic. You can use this video to tell a story related to the content, offer a perspective that relates to the material, or simply address the expectations for the week.
