Become fluent in German and explore the rich, complex history and culture of one of the most influential countries in Europe! 

The German-speaking world has been home to Mozart and Bach, Nietzsche and Heidegger, Einstein and Bohr. Germany today is the strongest economy in Europe, has one of the fastest-growing independent art scenes (in Berlin), and is a worldwide research leader in fields from renewable energy to nanotechnology. 

In the German program, you will take courses in basic language, conversation and composition, and translation, as well as German literature, history and culture courses. The program will develop your linguistic skills, sharpen your literary analysis, and build your understanding of cultures in German-speaking countries. In addition to German language courses on all levels, the program offers German literature and civilization classes as well as a large variety of extra-curricular activities. 

Becoming fluent in German will open up a world of job opportunities, a world of travel opportunities, and offers real advantages in the multicultural world of the humanities, the arts, government and the sciences. Our students have landed spots in top graduate programs, and found success in a wide variety of fields such as business, civil service, translation, interpreting, public relations, and more!

Go Global with a Minor

The minor in German is an 18-credit program available to undergraduate students from any major. Students will take a combination of introductory and elective courses in Intermediate and Advanced German, as well as literature, history, and culture courses such as German Through Music: From Mozart to Rammstein, Nazi Cinema and Propaganda, German Through Graphic Novels, and German Fairy Tales. 

In the minor, you will develop your language skills, sharpen literary analysis, and build an understanding of cultures in German-speaking countries. You will not only study the German language, but also German literature and civilization, and have the opportunity to join in a variety of extra-curricular activities. 

Knowing another language is a great advantage when exploring job opportunities and when that language is German, you have an even greater advantage!

SPARK For German Lab

Montclair State University’s German program has run a SPARK Lab as part of a fast-growing national network of SPARK Labs, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German and the Goethe-Institute.

At our SPARK Lab, a team of about 15 student volunteers work in an after-school program in a local school, teaching elementary school children for about six weeks per semester, one hour per week.
