Ever wonder why society is the way it is?
How are beauty standards formed? Why do people choose the partners they marry? Why are some careers seen as "men’s work" or "women’s work?"
If you’re always asking "why" you might be a sociologist in the making.
What Is Sociology?
Sociology is the scientific study of human society – how people behave within groups, and how those groups shape everything from our personal beliefs to the laws we follow.
Sociologists explore big questions about inequality, culture, institutions, and social change. If you’ve ever noticed patterns in how people act or questioned the “rules” we all seem to follow, you’re already thinking like one.
Your Degree, Your Community
The SCHOLAR certificate is built into every Bloomfield College degree. Designed to give our students an experiential advantage, the certificate creates opportunities to collaborate with community partners to solve real-world problems.
Course Spotlight: Sociology of the Family (SOC 249)
Why do families look so different today? What even is a “traditional” family anymore? In this course, you’ll explore how family life has evolved over time – and what it says about our society. From dating and marriage to culture clashes and generational shifts, Sociology of the Family unpacks the social forces that shape everything from your childhood memories to the future you’re building.
