The MS in Chemistry provides a comprehensive understanding of chemical principles and their real-world applications. You’ll deepen your expertise through a combination of advanced coursework, seminars, independent study, and research opportunities. Courses cover all major areas of chemistry and biochemistry, including physical, inorganic, organic, analytical, and specialized instrumentation topics. Whether you’re preparing for a career in chemical research, pharmaceutical development, or doctoral study, you’ll have the flexibility you need to help you meet your professional goals. Choose from multiple research pathways, including a thesis or graduate literature search, and complete a culminating seminar presentation aligned with your area of focus. The program is STEM-designated.
Admission Requirements
- Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree.
- Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
- When a student has been admitted, the Graduate Program Coordinator for Chemistry and Biochemistry will evaluate the background in chemistry, biochemistry, other sciences and mathematics, and a specific program will be designed. An entering student should present at least 24 credits of undergraduate chemistry credits.
Application Checklist
Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
- Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
- Transcript: One from each college attended.
- Essays/Personal Statement: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
- What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
- In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
- Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
- Letters of Recommendation: Two.
- Standardized Test Scores: GRE Optional
Support for Your Journey
The OPEN-NJ scholarship awards up to $10,000/year for 2-3 years and provides students with mentorship and guidance specifically geared for Chemistry programs. This is an ideal fit for students who want to work in northern New Jersey's expansive chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
