Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences
- MS
- Master's
The MS in Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences provides advanced, research-based training in marine ecosystems, coastal processes, and aquatic biodiversity. You’ll gain a deep understanding of the biological and physical factors that shape marine and coastal environments, including human activity, pollution, and habitat loss.
Emphasizing fieldwork and data analysis, the program integrates real-world experiences through Montclair’s connections to coastal New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. You will benefit from close faculty mentorship and the opportunity to conduct original research in areas such as estuarine ecology, marine microbiology, and coastal restoration. Graduates are prepared for careers in marine research, environmental consulting, education, or to pursue further study at the doctoral level. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available. The program is STEM-designated.
Combined BS/MS in Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences
Undergraduate students can fast-track their education by applying for a dual degree program in their junior year. The combined degree option allows students to complete their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years. Students begin graduate-level coursework during their senior year and continue through an additional fifth year. This path is ideal for students seeking deeper research experience or preparation for leadership in environmental science careers.
