The MS in Molecular Biology provides advanced knowledge in cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive biological function and disease. The curriculum integrates theory with hands-on lab research in areas such as gene expression, protein function, immunology, and molecular genetics.

Designed for students pursuing careers in biotechnology, biomedicine, or doctoral study, the program fosters technical expertise, critical thinking, and independent investigation. Coursework includes Molecular Biology and electives such as Virology, Advance Neuroscience, and Bioinformatics.

You can tailor the degree toward career goals through thesis or non-thesis options. With small class sizes and access to Montclair’s research facilities, you’ll collaborate closely with faculty and gain practical experience using cutting-edge molecular tools. The degree also prepares you for advancement in clinical research, pharmaceutical development, or further graduate study in biomedical sciences or education. The program is STEM-designated. Thesis & Non-thesis Options

Students can choose the path that best fits their career goals.

Thesis Option

Students pursuing a thesis complete original research under faculty supervision and write a formal thesis. This option is ideal for those planning doctoral study or lab-focused roles in industry.

Non-thesis Option

This track replaces the thesis with additional coursework or supervised lab experience. It is suitable for students entering education, regulatory roles, or biotechnology fields where independent research is not required.


Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.

Application Checklist

Application Deadline: Rolling admission.

  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Transcript: One from each college attended.
  • Essays/Personal Statement: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career?
    • Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two.
  • Standardized Test Scores: GRE is optional.
