The MS in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry at Montclair State University is designed to prepare you for careers in applied research, product development, and support roles within the pharmaceutical industry. You’ll gain the biochemical, pharmacological, and drug design skills needed to work in areas such as R&D, inspection, regulatory affairs, technical sales, or service. 

This program offers a core curriculum that closely mirrors the drug discovery process used in the pharmaceutical industry. You’ll study the biochemical foundations of drug screening, medicinal chemistry technologies, and the pharmacological evaluation of new drug candidates. The curriculum combines advanced coursework with optional research or independent study, giving you the flexibility to tailor your experience to your professional goals. 

Graduates of the program are well-positioned for immediate entry into pharmaceutical or biotech industries, or for future doctoral study. The program is STEM-designated.

Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
  • An entering student should present at least 18 credits of undergraduate chemistry credits and have adequate preparation in college mathematics, physics, and biology.

Application Checklist

  • Application Deadline: Rolling Admission.
  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Transcript: (One) from each college attended.
  • Essays/Personal Statement: Please write one integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two (2).
  • Standardized Test Scores: GRE Optional
