Montclair Modalities of Instruction: HawkFLEX
HAWKFlex represents the range of instructional delivery options available for Montclair courses. The range aims to support the instructional needs of students, faculty, and programs within the challenging environment of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Updated for Fall 2021.
- Montclair offers fully in-person, hybrid, and remote instruction.
- Hybrid instruction: In Hybrid, HawkLIVE, HawkMIX, and HawkFIELD modalities, instruction is provided through a mix of in-person and online methodologies.
- Remote Instruction: In HawkSYNC (Zoom, “live”) and HawkASYNC (not live), remote instruction is provided.

Hawk2Hawk (H2H) – Traditional F2F Delivery |
- Deliver course F2F.
- All class sessions run as scheduled on campus.
- Teach in a standard classroom with class capacity set at room capacity.

- Attendance on campus is expected.
- Complete course activities as scheduled.
- Need access to computer and internet for out of class activities.

HawkLIVE (HLV) – Class meets F2F and streams online simultaneously for students unable to attend F2F |
- Deliver courses simultaneously to F2F and remote learners.
- All class sessions on campus; faculty must be present for each class just as in F2F classes.
- Determine on-campus rotation for students for COVID cap.
- Teach in an enhanced classroom or use a streaming remote kit.

- Some students attend class in-person, while others attend remotely, simultaneously.
- F2F attendance expected as scheduled.
- Students complete activities as scheduled.

HawkMIX (HMX):
Mix of F2F and Online Instruction (SYNC or ASYNC).
- HawkMIX/F2F & SYNC:
- Specified contact hours scheduled in a classroom (ex: M 11:15-12:30); the remainder of weekly contact hours are scheduled as SYNC online (ex: R 11:15-12:30).
- HawkMIX/F2F & ASYNC:
- Specified contact hours scheduled in a classroom (ex: M 11:15-12:30).

- Teach class sessions on campus following the published schedule.
- Supplement on-campus sessions with online instruction.
- Determine schedule for students’ on-campus attendance.
- Determine whether rotating remote attendance is an option for students.
- Standard classroom, but faculty who wish to deliver course LIVE may request enhanced classroom or use a streaming remote kit.

- Rotate between on-campus and remote attendance as scheduled by the instructor.
- Complete course activities as scheduled.
- May need access to a computer with mic and camera for video-conferencing (e.g., Zoom), depending on faculty delivery.

HawkSYNC ONLINE (SON):
Fully online with live, synchronous class sessions
- HAWKSYNC 100% – All weekly contact hours scheduled online.
- HawkSYNC 50% – Half the weekly contact hours scheduled online.

- Deliver course material synchronously or in a sync / async mix, in accordance with published schedule.
- No classroom scheduled.

- Regular attendance online in live sessions is expected.
- Complete assignments outside of class as scheduled.
- Need access to a computer with mic and camera for video-conferencing (e.g., Zoom) and out-of-class assignments.

HawkASYNC ONLINE (AON) – Fully online asynchronously. |
- Deliver course material asynchronously.
- No synchronous sessions.
- No classroom scheduled.

- Complete asynchronous activities as scheduled.
- No specific meeting times.
- Need access to computer and internet for class activities.

HawkField (FLD) – Professional activities conducted at a placement site. |
- May deliver didactic class sessions synchronously in accordance with published schedule.
- May need a scheduled room depending on the course.
- May supervise students conducting activities at a placement site.
- Covers courses normally thought of as internship, externship, co-operative experience, clinical rotation, practicum and the like.

- Regular attendance at placement activities in coordination with the instructor is expected.
- Regular attendance for supervision, mentoring, etc. as determined by faculty.
- Complete assignments at site and outside of class as scheduled.
- May need access to a computer with mic and camera for video conferencing (e.g. Zoom) and out-of-class assignments.

Definitions:
- Standard classroom: equipped with projection capabilities.
- Enhanced classroom: equipped with technology for interactive streaming of a live F2F class to remote students through the use of mics, speakers, and cameras (Zooming technologies).
- Streaming remote kit: portable equipment that enables interactive streaming of a live F2F class to remote students through the use of mics, speakers, and cameras (Zooming technologies).
Universal Expectations Across Modalities
- Use the CANVAS learning management system; for specific expectations, see the Canvas Universal Guidelines and also the Montclair Syllabus, which outlines essential information to provide.
- Follow modality requirements, and do not make independent changes in modality. For exceptional circumstances, see Chair guidance and approval.
- Communicate with students one or two weeks in advance of your first class to ensure familiarity with course requirements and expectations
- Consider a Pre-Semester Student Survey, available in 6 modalities to explain modality, raise expectations, and gain feedback on student preparedness. Surveys are also available in Canvas Commons, accessible through your Canvas course.
- Prepare to pivot to HawkSYNC Online or HawkAYNC Online for a series of weeks or for the duration of the semester if so required by University or State policy.
