2023-24 Study Abroad/Away Opportunity & Access Scholarships (SOAR)

With funding secured by the Office of the Provost, International Academic Initiatives is pleased to announce the SOAR Scholarships. Awards will be as follows: $3000 for semester abroad programs, $2000 for Summer and National Student Exchange (Spring ’23), and $1000 for short-term faculty-led programs. These awards are available to students of any major who have demonstrated financial need. In order to be considered, students must have completed their program application by the respective program deadline (Oct. 1st for Spring semester study, Oct. 15th for faculty-led programs, and Mar. 1st for Summer and Fall semester programs. Applicants will be asked to provide short answers (150-300 words each) to the following questions using the application link below.

  • Explain how your study abroad program will help advance your future academic and/or professional goals.
  • Describe how you plan to engage culturally during your study abroad experience.
  • Please share how the scholarship will help bring study abroad within your financial reach.

The next upcoming deadlines for SOAR scholarships are October 1st, 2023 for Spring semester study and October 15th, 2023 for Spring Break study. Students who complete applications and are accepted to study abroad in in Spring 2024 are eligible to APPLY HERE.

Kade Foundation Scholarships for German language study (apply by 3/15/23)

We are pleased to share that due to the initiative of the Montclair State University Corporate and Foundation Relations team, we will receive funding from the Max Kade Foundation for eight summer study abroad scholarships of $1500 each in Summer 2023. These will be offered only to students who are accepted to study the German language abroad in Summer 2023, at one of the preferred programs of study: the Munich Summer Language Study program at LMU Munchen or the Lake Constance Summer School at the University of Konstanz. Students who are accepted in our Montclair State StudioAbroad portal for Summer 2023 and also accepted by either the LMU Munchen’s MISU program or the Lake Constance Summer School are eligible to apply for the $1500 scholarships using this link. Students with questions are encouraged to email Professors Pascale LaFountain and Thomas Herold, or IAI director Tim White. Students should be aware that the $1500 scholarships will not actually be disbursed to students until the time of travel to Germany, and that both the MISU and Lake Constance programs will require deposits/payments prior to that. Applications must be completed using the link above no later than March 15th, 2023 at 11:59pm.

Montclair-Graz Sister City Scholarship

The program includes a full scholarship funded by both Montclair State University and the City of Graz.  It currently offers two Montclair State undergraduate students the opportunity to study tuition-free, with housing and a stipend for one academic year in Graz, Austria.

Erasmus+ Scholarship

Montclair State undergraduate students majoring within the Feliciano School of Business or the College of Science and Mathematics have the opportunity to apply for the Erasmus+ Scholarship to help subsidize the cost of a semester exchange at the University of Graz. This application is to study at Uni-Graz for either the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 semester with partial scholarship.

The scholarship provides one semester of € 820 travel subsidy and an € 850 per month stipend to help with living expenses.  Students are billed for tuition and fees by Montclair State. Students may apply for the academic year, but will only receive funding for one semester.

Harold S. Sloan Trust Award

$300-800 for semester or academic year exchange program for students in social sciences. No application required. All eligible students who complete a study abroad application by March 1 will be considered.

The Dugan Scholarship

A $500 scholarship for semester or academic year exchange. No application required. All eligible students who complete a study abroad application by March 1 will be considered.

Peter Balsamo Scholarship for Language and Heritage Study Abroad

Polly & Greg Dell’Omo Global Studies in Math  

$500 awarded annually to a Montclair State student studying mathematics. No application required.  All eligible students who complete a study abroad application by March 1 will be considered.

Anita Magistro Udell Scholarship for Language Majors       

$1,000 awarded annually to a student majoring in a foreign language who is in financial need or identifies as an underrepresented minority. No application required. All eligible students who complete a study abroad application by March 1 will be considered.
