Honoring Those Who Serve Us

As a military-friendly campus, Montclair supports more than 330 military-affiliated students – some returning from deployment and others on active duty, including with the National Guard and Reserves. Montclair honored our campus veterans with several events, including a flag raising ceremony, a barbecue and the opening of a veterans’ lounge.

Enhancing Our Academic Offerings

In the coming year, the University will divide the College of Education and Human Services into two separate and distinct colleges, while also launching a new School of Computing. Learn more about how these academic offerings promote further student success and respond to future workforce needs.

Connecting Students With Changemakers

CHSS Professors Sangeeta Parashar and Maneesha Kelka brought Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill to campus for a Q&A to discuss public service and leadership. Sherrill told students in the experiential learning course to use their passion to make life better for others.

Finance, Fortune, The Advocate, Ebony, Business Insider and Los Angeles Times.
• Daniel Jean (EOF and Academic Success) penned an opinion piece for NJ.com about Black and brown scholars needing more support to access higher education. In it, he discusses the newly launched Male Enrollment and Graduation Alliance (MEGA), a national initiative to improve the college attendance and completion of Black and Hispanic males.
• Stephanie Silvera (Public Health) is quoted in this NJ.com article about flu season in New Jersey.
• Fanny Lauby (Political Science and Law) is quoted in this NJ.com article about voting practices in New Jersey, ahead of this week’s midterm elections.
• Jason Williams (Justice Studies) participated in NJTV’s election night coverage.
• Milton Fuentes (Psychology) is quoted in this American Psychological Association article about how experts in the field are working to diversify the undergraduate curriculum and make classrooms more inclusive.
• Senta German (Classics and General Humanities) appeared in an article in El Mundo about heritage repatriation. (This article was published in Spanish.)
• The Chronicle of Higher Education mentions Montclair’s transfer agreement with Hudson County Community College in an article about New Jersey City University’s current financial situation.

Reminders

• The campus community is encouraged to join the Volunteer Center and numerous campus organizations and departments for events and service projects during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, November 12-20. To learn more, visit the Engage calendar.
• Information Technology is working with outside experts to fix Banner student system outages.
• Come see our Theatre and Dance students in Pippin, a multi-Tony Award-winning musical that dazzles with exciting choreography and show-stopping songs by Stephen Schwartz. November 11-12, 16-18. For tickets and showtimes visit the department’s website.
• The Cans for Citations program is back! Now through November 23, 2022, donations of canned or unopened packaged goods will be accepted toward paying off one open citation. Each can or package is worth $10 toward the citation, so to pay off a $40 citation, bring at least four! Sorry, repeat offenders: Donations can be used toward only one citation.
• An updated version of the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client will be deployed to university-owned and managed computers on November 16 at 10 p.m. If you are logged in at this time, you will be disconnected. Refer to the recent email from Information Technology for details.
• You can find the latest campus COVID-19 data, including case numbers, on the COVID-19 Dashboard.
• With Thanksgiving break and the winter closing approaching, Human Resources asks all employees to review the instructions for timekeeping.

• To Professor Emeritus Gregory L. Waters (English), who has been elected chair of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the state’s designated statewide partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
• To Roman Liera (Educational Leadership) whose paper on equity in faculty searches published in The Review of Higher Education is among the top 10 most viewed for the 2021-22 year.
• To Antonio Talamo (Commuter Life), who won the Joseph H. Benedict Award for excellence and commitment at the Association for College Unions International Region VII conference and to the Office of Commuter Life for winning the 2022 Outstanding Community Building Program Award for Commuter Life Appreciation Week.
• To Nancy Carnevale (History) who was invited by the Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis/St. Paul to speak on “Italian Americans and their Languages Past and Present.”
• To Arnaud Kurze (Justice Studies), who co-authored Mapping Global Justice: Perspectives, Cases and Practice, which examines international conflicts, increasing regional inequality, and environmental- and climate-related threats to humanity. He discussed the book on Wilson Center NOW with the Former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and a program director for the Arab Reform Initiative.
