Moderate Hiking Trip

  • Date: Thursday, June 9

Moderate Hike (Bearfort Mountain) A moderate to strenuous 4.1 mile hike along the NJ-NY state line; some steep inclines and rock scrambles lead to stunning views of Greenwood Lake and NYC on a clear day; hike also stops along Surprise Lake and covers a short section of the Appalachian Trail.

What to Bring: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes; Water; packed Lunch; Bug Spray; Sunblock; Layered Clothing.

Potential hazards: Poisonous plants/allergies, insect bites, unpredictable weather changes, sunburn/heat exhaustion, hypothermia, dehydration, steep, rocky, and/or slippery terrain, rolling or falling rocks, snakes and large animals, injuries including sprains/strains, abrasions, lacerations and fractures.

Boardwalk Beach Cruise

Let Hawk-on-Wheels treat you to a FREE bicycle rental so you can cruise along the boardwalk from Belmar to Asbury Park. Take a ride on the Carousel, see the historic Paramount Theatre and check out local artists at the Grand Arcade. And of course, music history everywhere!

Advanced Hike

  • Location: Mount Tammany (Begins and ends at Student Recreation Center)

Advanced Hike (Mount Tammany): Strenuous 3.5 mile loop hike; rocky and steep with great views of the Delaware Water Gap and surrounding area.

River Tubing

A leisurely float down the Delaware river, at a relaxed pace.**All participants must wear coastguard approved life jackets or pass a swim test.

Essex County’s own Turtle-back Zoo is located just minutes from campus. Try the beginner’s level ropes course, take a spin in the paddle boats or just hang with the animals – there are brand new baby giraffes! This is the perfect event for those new to our program. Also, it’s family-friendly!

Archery Trip

Learn the basics of archery, receive some basic instruction in range safety, technique and equipment use, then get a chance to test your aim on an active range.
