Do you see the world through art—drawn to how images carry emotion, spark questions, and reflect the culture around us? The Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts at Montclair State prepares you to develop that instinct into a rigorous, expansive practice.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum includes courses in traditional and emerging media, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, metalwork, lens-based media, and digital rendering and 3D printing. You will study closely with expert faculty, as you learn to build your technical skills, develop your creative voice, and explore critical connections across art forms and ideas. Students regularly exhibit their work on and off campus, culminating in a capstone project that showcases their artistic and intellectual growth.

Graduates go on to careers across the creative industries or continue their studies at the graduate level.

Note: No portfolio required for admission. Internal transfer students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

Explore a Minor in the Visual Arts

If art is central to how you think and make—but you're pursuing a degree in another field—the Visual Arts minor gives you the structured studio time and faculty mentorship to develop your practice with intention.

The Visual Arts Minor is designed for undergraduates who want to explore art alongside their non-studio major. Offering an introduction to art history, design and hands-on studio work, the minor builds creative skills that can complement a related field, expand career opportunities, or satisfy an independent passion for the arts.
