If you’re ready to take your musicianship to the next level, the Master of Music at Montclair State University’s John J. Cali School of Music will help you refine your artistry and prepare for a successful career in the music world.
As a student in the MM program, you’ll receive advanced training designed to support your unique goals as a performer, conductor or collaborative pianist. Whether you aspire to be an opera singer, concert artist, orchestral musician, jazz artist, arranger or freelance performer, you’ll develop the skills and confidence to stand out on stage and in the studio.
You’ll work closely with world-class faculty mentors, gain access to exciting performance opportunities and benefit from Montclair’s proximity to New York City’s thriving arts scene. Many of our graduates go on to successful performance and teaching careers or continue to doctoral study in music performance and pedagogy.

Audition Requirements
All music applicants must complete an audition for the Cali School of Music. Your audition may consist of one or more of the following: a formal audition, an interview, a portfolio submission. The combination differs for each program. Review application and audition requirements, paying special attention to both the program requirements and the repertoire.
Admission Requirements
- Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree.
- Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
Application Checklist
Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
- Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
- Transcript: One from each college attended.
- Statement of Purpose: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
- What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
- In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
- Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
- Letters of Recommendation: Two.
