What is a club sport?
- A club sport is a club or organization formed by groups of students with a common interest in sport and recreation who collectively organize and participate in activities related to that sport. Clubs can operate on a recreation, instructional, or competitive level with activities ranging from informal play, to regular practices and instruction, to intercollegiate competition.
Who is eligible to join a club sport at MSU?
- Club sports are open to all Montclair State University students.
How do I become a part of a club?
- To join a club, contact the club president for membership requirements. Club contact information can be found on our website at www.montclair.edu/Campusrec/clubsports, or by calling our office at 973-655-3346.
What are the benefits of joining a club sport?
- Club Sports at Montclair State University provide many benefits including the opportunity to be part of a team, participate in a sport activity, to get involved and meet new people, new leadership opportunities, and the ability to pursue fitness and recreational opportunities. Club Sports is one of the fastest growing programs in recreation at universities all around the country.
What is the difference between club sports and intramural sports?
- Club Sports are led and organized by students. Team practices, meetings, competitions and fundraisers are led by club officers and club members. Club Sports practice multiple times per week and many travel to compete against Club Sports teams at other universities around the country. Intramural sports consist of MSU students, faculty and staff that compete against each other in organized leagues and tournaments within the MSU community on a more recreational level.
What is the difference between club sports and a varsity athletic program?
- Sport clubs are organized and managed by students. They are funded by membership dues, club initiated fundraisers, and commercial sponsorship. Clubs can operate on a recreation or instructional level, and many compete on an intercollegiate level against other Universities. Clubs are overseen by the Department of Campus Recreation and operate under the guidelines of Campus Recreation as well as their own individual leagues and conferences (as applicable). Varsity athletic sports are housed in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and compete in Division III NCAA competition. These teams compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and operate under NCAA rules and guidelines.
Do I need experience in order to participate?
- No. Clubs are open to participants of all skill levels. Participants will play at the captain's discretion. However, all members will be able to practice and participate in club activities.
Do clubs conduct tryouts?
- Most clubs do conduct tryouts; however it is not required by all clubs. Contact the specific club for tryout information.
Do club sports charge membership dues?
- Most sport clubs do charge varying amounts of membership dues, depending on the club. Dues vary year to year for some clubs. Membership dues are one the primary sources of revenue for clubs to cover their annual expenses. Contact the specific club you are interested in to find out about their dues.
How are club sports funded?
- Clubs do not receive direct funding from Campus Recreation and therefore need to raise money to fund club activities. Clubs can charge member dues in addition to fundraising activities, donations from outside organizations, and commercial sponsorship.
How do I start a new club sport?
- The Club Sports program encourages students to pursue the establishment of new clubs and further expansion of the program. Complete the Club Sport registration form (found in Appendix C of the handbook found at www.montclair.edu/Campusrec/clubsports). Follow the "How to Start a New Club" link on the website.
Where is the club sports office located?
- The Club Sports office is located in the Student Recreation center in room 1105.
