International Transfer Application Process

1. STEP 1: Online application

   Submit your online application.

2. STEP 2: Application Fee

   After you submit the application, you will see instructions for paying the $65 non‑refundable application fee on the status page of your application portal. If you are applying to a program with an audition fee (Dance, Music, Music Therapy, Musical Theatre, Theatre), you will also be able to pay your audition fee through your status page.

3. STEP 3: Academic Evaluation

   An academic evaluation and English translation of all coursework completed in another country are required at the time of application. Transfer students must submit an evaluation of their official high school transcript and a course‑by‑course evaluation of all college‑level work.​

   Submission/evaluation of the high school transcript is waived for applicants who have completed or will complete an associate’s degree, or for students who have completed 30 or more college‑level credits at a four‑year institution. Although Montclair no longer requires SAT or ACT scores, students with fewer than 30 completed college credits may submit scores if they would like them considered in the application process.​

   Students who have not earned an associate’s degree or who have fewer than 30 credits must submit their secondary/high school academic transcripts, credentials, and/or exam scores; see the required academic documentation page for more details.​

   The evaluation must come from an organization affiliated with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). A listing of NACES member organizations is available on the NACES website.

4. STEP 4: English Language Proficiency Test Scores (If Required)

   International students, with the exception of those eligible for waivers (noted below), must submit proof of English proficiency. Students must submit one of the following as proof.

   Exemptions from English Language Proficiency Requirement

   Proof of medium of instruction (MOI) in English is NOT sufficient, however the English Language Proficiency requirement can be waived if you meet one of the criteria listed below:

   • Students who are citizens of the United States.
   • Students who are citizens of one of the countries exempted from the English Language Proficiency requirement. 
   • Students who graduated from a high school in the United States, a U.S. territory, or any of the countries exempted from the criteria.
   • Students who have satisfactorily completed at least 24 credit hours (not including ESL classes) at an accredited college or university in the United States, a U.S. territory, or one of the countries  exempted from the criteria.
   • Students who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of College Composition I and College Composition II with a grade of ‘C’ or above at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or a U.S. territory.

5. STEP 5: Personal Statement/Essay and Resume/List of Co-Curricular Activities

   Essays are optional for most transfer applicants; however, certain majors require specific essay(s).  Essay prompts vary by major. 

   If you wish to submit a resume or list of extracurricular activities for review, you can upload this document in your application or on your status page after submitting your application. A résumé is required for Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre majors, but optional for all other programs.
