Advising Guidelines for Computer Science Majors

Programs offered in the Computer Science Department: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Data Science are restricted majors requiring a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher for Computer Science and Data Science, and a 2.7 or higher for Information Technology.

For Incoming Freshmen

First Semester Major Courses

  • MATH 111 or MATH 122 (based on placement)
  • CSIT 104
  • CSIT 111

These courses must be passed with a minimum grade of C- within the student’s first year.

For Currently Matriculated MSU Students Interested in Declaring Computer Science

Before submitting a declaration of major form to the department, students must have completed MATH 111 or MATH 122 or AMAT 120, CSIT 104, and CSIT 111, and with grades of C- or higher. Students will be able to take CSIT 104 (a required course and prerequisite for CSIT 112) and CSIT 111 concurrently and then take CSIT 112. A GPA of 3.0 is required.
