Advising Guidelines for Computer Science Majors

Programs offered in the Computer Science Department: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Data Science are restricted majors requiring a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher for Computer Science and Data Science, and a 2.6 or higher for Information Technology.

For Incoming Freshmen

First Semester Major Courses

  • Pre-Calculus (MATH 111) or Calculus I (MATH 122) – Based on placement
  • CSIT 104
  • CSIT 111

These courses must be passed with a minimum grade of C- within the student’s first year.

For Currently Matriculated MSU Students Interested in Declaring Computer Science

Before submitting a declaration of major form to the department, students must have completed CSIT 111 and CSIT 112 with grades of B or higher. Students will be able to take CSIT 104 (a required course and prerequisite for CSIT 112) and CSIT 111 concurrently and then take CSIT 112. No additional GPA requirement is required.
