All full-time students must have health insurance and are automatically charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) on their student account to ensure compliance. However, students have the opportunity to waive or opt out of SHIP by submitting proof of a comprehensive, Affordable Care Act (ACA)-compliant health insurance plan online through University Health Plans.
How to Waive or Enroll in the University Health Insurance
- Visit the University Health Plans (UHP) Website to either waive or enroll in the school-sponsored health insurance plan.
- Waive: Simply complete the Waiver Form before the deadline of Monday, September 15, 2025.
- Enroll: Simply complete the Enroll Form. If you do not complete this form, you will automatically be enrolled and charged the student health insurance premium.
- If you do not act to waive or enroll, you will receive weekly reminders directly from University Health Plans (UHP).
- Get Access to Health Services! Enrolling before the waiver deadline date will allow you access to the benefits as early as the plan’s effective date, which is Thursday, August 15, 2025. Regardless of the type of insurance coverage you have, all Montclair State University students are eligible to receive outpatient care at the Student Health Center on the Montclair campus or the Bloomfield campus. Co-pay fees are not charged to the student.
- If you enrolled in the University Health Plan, you can access your insurance card online. Select “Insurance ID Card: on the left side of the page.
Deadline to Waive or Enroll
To ensure compliance, you are automatically billed for the SHIP and will be automatically enrolled if a waiver is not submitted online by Monday, September 15, 2025.
You will be responsible for paying the premium even if you have other health insurance coverage, if you fail to waive it by the deadline! Get More Information about Student Health Insurance.
*Full-time students are defined as:
- Undergraduate: twelve (12) or more credits.
- Graduate: nine (9) or more credits
- Please Note: Students enrolled exclusively in fully online degree programs are exempt from the health insurance requirement and are not automatically enrolled in SHIP. To see if your program qualifies, refer to the list of online degree programs offered by Montclair State University.
International Students are defined as:
- All F-1 students, regardless of full-time or part-time status, are required to have U.S.-filed, ACA-compliant health insurance.
- J-1 visa holders must meet the US Department of State’s health insurance minimums.
- Please visit Mandatory Health Requirements on the Office of Global Engagement page to view the mandatory health requirements.
- International students do not have access to the online enrollment form. They are automatically enrolled prior to the waiver deadline date.
- If you have your own health insurance plan that meets all of the waiver requirements, you can request the International Student Waiver Form by contacting University Health Plans:
- Phone: (833) 251-1705
- Email: info@univhealthplans.com
Health insurance plans marketed solely to International students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks and/or coverage periods, and do not comply with the Montclair State insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.
