In general, no: only grades of C- or better are accepted in transfer. However, there are two exceptions:
Students receive 2/3 of a Montclair State University credit hour for each quarter hour earned elsewhere. For example, four quarter hours from a transfer institution equal 2.67 credit hours at Montclair State.
Yes. However, the course must be deemed equivalent to a course that fulfills the Montclair State multicultural awareness requirement.
As of fall 2008, transfer students without foreign-language coursework must take two introductory semesters of the same language in sequential order or one semester at the intermediate level or higher. Introductory courses at Montclair State are coded with a I or a II and intermediate and higher courses are coded with a III and a IV or higher.
No. Two successful introductory semesters or one semester or higher at an intermediate level for any foreign language meet the Montclair State world language requirement.
At Montclair State, we try our best to ensure that most credits transfer provided they are from an accredited, degree-granting College / University. For your own reference, we do not give credit for basic skill courses, ESL courses lower than level 100, or courses where the earned grade is lower than a C-. You will be informed of the exact number of transferrable credits in yourAnalysis of Academic Progress (credit evaluation), which will be made available to you online within 10 business days of the receipt of your acceptance letter.
Generally, courses taken with grades of “P”, “CR”, or “S” are accepted at full credit value provided they are college level degree credits from your previous school.
Students who earn CLEP credits through another college must submit official test scores to Montclair State University in order to receive credit. (Please note: If the CLEP credits contributed to the completion of an AA or AS degree from a NJ Community College test scores are not required.)
Students who took AP courses in H.S. must submit official test scores to Montclair State in order to receive credit.
Generally, students arriving on campus with 24 or more college-level credits are exempt from taking the Math/English placement tests. However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, certain majors that require higher-level math course requirements may require further testing. Also, if you have not successfully completed at least (1) foreign language course in college and/or your only experience with foreign language was at the high school level; you will be required to take a Foreign Language placement test.
Students who transfer to Montclair State with less than 24 credits should contact the Center for Academic Development and Assessment which is the office that determines the need for additional basic skills.
