Essay Prompts for Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 Applicants

Freshman Applicants

All Applicants (except selected majors below):

Explain your reasons for seeking admission to Montclair State University, including what you believe are your academic strengths and interests. Be sure to explain any situations that may have had an impact, either positively or negatively, on your academic record.

Adult Learner Applicants (excluding RN to BSN applicants):

Submit a Personal Statement that demonstrates what you have learned through formal education and/or life experiences.

School of Nursing Applicants (BSN):

Please provide a brief personal statement describing why you wish to pursue a career in Nursing.

College of the Arts Applicants

Applicants to Animation and Illustration, Dance, Music, Music Therapy, Musical Theatre, Product Design, Theatre, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design:

Please discuss why you wish to study your program of choice in the College of the Arts at Montclair State. Be sure to include highlights of your experience related to your chosen academic program and how those experiences have shaped your current career goals.

Product Design Applicants (In addition to the question above):

Please discuss your interest in studying Product Design at Montclair State University and what you hope to gain as a result of your studies. What passions do you have that relate to your choice of major and career?

Communication and Media Arts, Communication Studies and Public Relations Applicants:

Please upload one document which includes three separate essays for the following prompts:

  1. In approximately 200 words, identify and discuss a communication issue that especially intrigues you, and explain why it intrigues you.
  2. In approximately 200 words, describe an experience you have had that relates to your intended major, clarifying the connection.
  3. In approximately 200 words, identify and discuss at least one course description from the curriculum that you think would especially support your education objectives.

Filmmaking Applicants:

Please upload as one document your responses to the following essay prompts:

  1. In approximately 200 words, tell us about a creative project you completed or about an issue in communication and media that especially intrigues you.
  2. Biographical Statement: Provide a one-page biographical statement that describes who you are and your goals for studying Filmmaking at Montclair State (Review curriculum here). Why do you want to study Filmmaking? What do you perceive to be the relationship between the art of filmmaking and the world? What kinds of stories do you want to tell?
  3. Answer the following questions with short, concise responses (no more than 50 characters per response):
    1. What are you known for? (i.e.; traits, actions or other)
    2. If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
    3. List one favorite story from literature that has influenced your dreams.
    4. What is the most research or exploration you have ever done on a topic, and/or theme for yourself, or a paper, or for a film?
    5. A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is it here?

Journalism and TV and Digital Media Applicants:

Please upload as one document your responses to the following essay prompts:

  1. In approximately 200 words, please explain a) why you want to major in journalism/television and digital media, and b) describe any relevant interests, experiences or creative media projects you’ve completed such as an article, video or social media campaign (share a link if possible).
  2. In approximately 200 words, tell us what roles you think the fields of journalism and television and digital media play in American society? You may draw upon a newsworthy issue that made headlines in the media recently and which intrigued you or had an impact on you.
  3. Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself that relates to your proposed major such as awards, school clubs or other activities outside of school that you’ve been involved in? (100 words or less.)

Transfer Applicants

All Applicants (except selected majors below):

Providing an essay is optional. Should you choose to upload an essay, please provide a brief description of your educational goals. Be sure to explain any discrepancies that may be reflected on your transcript.

School of Nursing Applicants (RN to BSN):
