NJCUE is a pathway to certification in New Jersey for Math, Science and Dual Certification (Elem. Ed. K-5 / Special Education) teachers. Funded by the US Department of Education, NJCUE is a partnership with: Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, William Paterson University, Kean University, and the Newark, Paterson, and Jersey City school districts

Purpose of the program: NJCUE is designed to recruit, prepare and support teachers for positions in mathematics, the sciences, and special education in Newark, Paterson and Jersey City through an accelerated certification program.

Program Components: NJCUE begins every June with an 8-week program of courses, half-time student teaching for 6 weeks, and mentoring. Participants begin teaching in Newark, Paterson or Jersey City beginning in September. Coursework continues one evening per week during fall and spring terms, followed by a two-week summer institute at the end of the first year of teaching for Math and Science Majors. Dual Certification is an 18-month program.

Participants receive on-going mentoring during the first year of teaching and peer coaching during the second and third years.

Admissions requirements:
  • BA or BS in math for math teaching positions.
  • BS in a natural or physical science for science teaching positions.
  • Major or concentration in the liberal arts for special education teaching positions.
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Passing score on the appropriate Praxis II examination(s)
Program Advantages:
  • 33 graduate credits tuition-free to meet certification requirements for Dual Certification
  • 21-24 graduate credits tuition-free to meet state requirements for Math/Science Certification
  • Credits counted toward an MAT degree at Montclair State, Kean, William Paterson and New Jersey City Universities
  • $2000 summer stipend during student teaching
  • Intensive mentoring during the summer and throughout the first year
  • On-going seminars and workshops
  • Peer coaching during years 2 and 3
*Participants must commit to 3 years of teaching in the urban district where hired or repay their tuition.
