Health and Nutrition Sciences
Mission
The mission of the Department of Health & Nutrition Sciences is to provide students with the professional and academic capabilities to meet the health and nutritional needs of individuals, schools, and communities. The department also seeks to provide students with the ability to succeed in a wide variety of employment settings such as corporations, government agencies, hospitals, private practices and schools. All academic programs reflect the mission and standards set by Montclair State University.
Overview
The Department of Health & Nutrition Sciences prepares students in educational theory, technology, research methods, the policy and practice of health, health & nutrition counseling, and administration. All programs include liberal arts and professional studies with an emphasis on clinical and field experience. By providing these tools, students are prepared to meet the demands of their future careers as well as graduate level education. Majors include Health Education, Allied Health Services, Nutrition and Food Science & Dietetics, Nutrition and Food Science & Food Management and Nutrition and Food Science & General. Minors include Health Studies and Nutrition and Food Science.
The Department of Health & Nutrition Sciences offers many opportunities for students majoring in these areas of study as well as students generally interested in our unique professions. Although the careers goals of majors are varied, there are certain common threads. Students tend to be people-oriented, concerned with lifelong activity, and interested in general fitness, wellness and business concepts. These characteristics apply to students preparing for traditional careers as teachers, clinicians, administrators and managers.
