Rarely exhibited works on paper by such 20th-century masters as Andy Warhol, Andre Masson, George Segal and Alexander Calder are on display at Montclair State’s George Segal Gallery through December 20, 2014.

The exhibit, Works on Paper, has received kudos for its “depth,” and includes prints, drawings, watercolor paintings and collages from the University’s permanent collection of more than 2,000 works on paper.

“This exhibit reflects Montclair State’s long-held institutional commitment to creating, maintaining and expanding a diverse permanent collection of fine art,” says College of the Arts Dean Daniel Gurskis. “We’re delighted to be able to share works from our collection with our students and the public and to continue the University’s tradition of making art accessible to everyone.”

Curated by Segal Gallery Director Teresa Lapid Rodriguez, Works on Paper is the first in a series of exhibits showcasing works from the University’s varied collection. The exhibit features six large silkscreens by Andy Warhol. Donated to the gallery in 2013 by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, these iconic works are being shown to the public for the very first time.

Other highlights of the exhibit include etchings and drawings by George Segal, lithographs by Will Barnet and Alexander Calder, and a newly acquired drawing by Ben Wilson. Two drawings by West Orange, New Jersey artist Henry Gasser were among the first works of art acquired by the University. Believed lost for 25 years, they were recently rediscovered in the University archives and are on view in the exhibit.

Spanning different movements and perspectives, Works on Paper provides a fresh understanding of some of the best-known European and American artists of the last century.
