Days after receiving a nomination for the prestigious National Association of Broadcasters’ Marconi Award for “College Radio Station of the Year,” the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) announced this week that WMSC is a finalist for six awards. Winners will be announced at CBI’s annual National Student Electronic Media Conference on October 29 in Orlando.

WMSC is a finalist in six audio and video categories:

Best Newscast – May the Fourth

Best Hard News Reporting – Colonial Pipeline Hack

Best Special Broadcast – WMSC’s World College Radio Day Hour for the 24-hour marathon Around the World

Best Documentary – Focus Racial Justice

Best Station Imaging

Best Comedy, “We’ll Be Back”.

In May, WMSC General Manager Anabella Poland was nominated by her peers for the Joel Willer Award, which is named after one of CBI’s founding members. The award is presented to advisors, faculty and staff to recognize exceptional dedication and service to student electronic media.

These nominations cap a string of top industry awards for WMSC this year. In March at the 81st  Annual  Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference and Awards, the station earned top honors as Best College Station (+more than 10,000 students), Best Program Director, Best Business Manager and Best Use of Sound Effects.

“It is an honor to be nominated for any award, but for our students to be recognized during such unpredictable and challenging circumstances speaks to their resiliency, creativity and embracing our university’s motto, Carpe diem,” Poland said. “I am excited for the new school year to work with our returning and new students to continue producing impactful, award-winning content.”

WMSC is one of five media organizations on campus, including The Montclarion (newspaper), News Lab (multi-platform digital outlet) Hawk Communications (strategic communications agency) and the Red Hawk Sports Network, which covers 18 varsity sports at the university in conjunction with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
