Dr. Penney Publishes New Research on Digital News Audiences in Media, Culture & Society

Dr. Joel Penney’s newest research article, titled “Entertainment journalism as a resource for public connection: a qualitative study of digital news audiences,” was recently published in the prestigious international journal Media, Culture, & Society. Dr. Penney is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Media.

In the study, Dr. Penney examines how audiences engage with entertainment news that intersects with political topics like racism, sexism, and transphobia, and discusses how this news “is used as a resource for navigating the politics of media representation, for making political meanings from celebrity culture, and for fulminating right-wing backlash to cultural institutions.”
