Red Hawk Sports Network (RHSN) students in the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University are finalists for two Sports Video Group (SVG) awards in the Outstanding Series and Special Feature categories. Out of the other 155 nominations across 22 collegiate categories, Montclair State is the only program without a NCAA Division 1 sport and is finalist against schools such as Duke, Alabama, Texas A&M, Clemson and Kentucky.

RHSN students are finalists for the “Inside The Nest” show in the Outstanding Program Series (Student Collegiate) category, as well as Outstanding Special Feature (Student Collegiate) for “Teammates,” The story of Sam Mills HOF Induction. “Inside The Nest” is a weekly magazine-style show that covers 18 varsity sports as well as feature stories on players, coaches and issues important to the athletics program. The show is produced by students in the RHSN Class with contributions from RHSN Interns and club members.

The Sam Mills film was created by a team of students who traveled to Ohio last summer to document the reaction of former teammates, family, friends, and the football world when the former Montclair State star linebacker was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Under the guidance of Professors Stacy Gitlin and Steve McCarthy who accompanied them on the trip, students Teni Bello, Matt Bruchez, Gianna Daginis, Jason Naccarella and Matt Orth covered events ranging from a Fashion Show, to a private BBQ for the Mills family, to the Class of 2022 Enshrinement ceremony.

“We are proud of our Red Hawk Sports Network students for their incredible storytelling efforts surrounding our amazing current and former Montclair State athletes,” said Gitlin, who is a professor in the School of Communication and Media and the coordinating producer for the Red Hawk Sports Network. “We are grateful for the Sports Video Group and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recognizing the quality of our students’ work.”

SVG, in partnership with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), will host the 15th annual SVG College Sports Media Awards in association with NACDA on May 31 in Atlanta. According to Tom Buffolano, chairman of the SVG College Sports Media Awards in association with NACDA, this was a record year for entries and number of schools submitting for the awards, surpassing by more than 30% the pre-pandemic levels. This is the first time Montclair State received a nomination. The full list of categories and nominees can be found here.
