Experience a Night of Japanese Art, Tradition, and Innovation

Join us for YOHAKU / Empty Space — a one-night-only cultural performance on September 12, 2025, at 7:30 PM in Memorial Auditorium at Montclair State University. This captivating event showcases a dynamic fusion of traditional and contemporary Japanese arts, including Kyogen comedy by renowned actor Nomura Matasaburo, live calligraphy by acclaimed artist Hiroko Watanabe, and contemporary dance by Yukari Yaku.  Also included in the program is music by Hozan Nomura and Seiko Hirata, with visual art by Mariko Sugito.

The evening features a screening of BONJI, an award-winning short film by Naoko Ukibe, inspired by a ghost story from Lafcadio Hearn and featuring Butoh dance and the haunting sound of the Biwa.

Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of Japanese culture, live on stage and on screen.
