From July 20–26, Montclair State University welcomed high school students for an intensive, hands-on Fashion Merchandising Pre-College Program, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative and business sides of the fashion industry. Over the course of seven days, participants explored trend forecasting, merchandising strategy, product development, sustainability, and career pathways, culminating in professional-level final campaign presentations.
The week began with an orientation session and community-building activities, led by the Program Director, Dr. Michelle Burton, and supported by rising senior Fashion Design student assistant Carolyn Ely, whose guidance throughout the week helped students stay organized and confident.
Students then explored the evolution of swimwear and future trend prediction in a session with Professor Susan Nowak, applying their insights to build a Summer 2026 trend board. On Day 3, Holland Grimeaux of Banson NYC introduced the fundamentals of assortment planning and buying strategy, supported by interactive simulations using NewArc AI to help students develop brand concepts and lineups.
Day 4 took students into New York City for an immersive industry tour, featuring:
- Suitsupply – Styling workshop and brand insights from their corporate accounts team.
- Zimmerman – A look at brand heritage and talent development from their Talent Acquisition and Onboarding Manager.
- 5W Public Relations – A session with the Senior Vice President of Consumer Products & Brands and her team on managing brand image in fashion and beauty.

Back on campus, Day 5 focused on sustainability and product development. Rachel Cerruti of FABSCRAP led a workshop on garment recycling methods, followed by Shirae Ravenell’s cost simulation and merchandising crash course.
The program closed with Mary Scalone of American Eagle Outfitters, who shared career advice and insights into internships, training programs, and corporate roles. Students then refined their projects, rehearsed pitches, and presented their final brand campaigns to peers and faculty before receiving certificates of completion.
Throughout the week, students experienced an inspiring, supportive environment that allowed them to gain industry knowledge, sharpen their creative skills, and build the confidence to take their next steps toward a future in fashion.
