News media 101: Sharing your expertise with the public

  • Faculty members have a great deal of expertise on subjects that matter to the public, and reporters want to help share that knowledge with their readers, listeners, or viewers. Working with the news media is an exciting opportunity to help educate the public while building the visibility of your program and the University. This workshop will provide simple, actionable tips for working with the news media: beginning with an overview, the workshop will also include some hands-on work to enable faculty to begin to see the path to becoming a faculty expert. Topics include: understanding the media’s needs, delivering your message effectively in a news media interview, and partnering with the Office of University Communications & Marketing. Recording of October 26, 2021 program (Panopto)*

News media 201: How to Write Opinion Pieces

Friday, October 7, 2022 (2pm – 3:30pm)

  • Want your thoughts on the news of the day – in your own words – to reach millions of readers? In this workshop, the Media Relations team will provide a template for writing effective opinion pieces for the news media. Participants will learn the process, step by step, and review examples from Montclair State faculty who have seen their work published in the media. Opinion pieces have a format that is widely accepted, and not particularly difficult to learn. Writing guidelines and submission schedules for outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post will also be provided. Recording of April 1, 2022 program

News media 301: Using Social Media to Showcase Your Expertise

  • Wondering how you can get your research and expertise in front of a massive audience? Social media is not just for influencers and content creators – it’s where nearly half of all U.S. adults say they get their news. In this workshop, the Media Relations team will offer tips and best practices on: how to use each top platform to promote your work; how to engage and share links to your media interviews; and showcase how to build a profile and post to different social platforms.

News Media 401: Advanced Media Training: On-Camera and Live Interviews

  • In this invitation-only course, members of the Faculty Experts Program and faculty who have completed News Media 101 will learn the tricks to being an effective on-air guest (both television and radio). With a special focus on live television interviews, faculty will learn what makes you a great on-air guest that producers call back. Participants will conduct mock interviews and be critiqued by resident expert and former television producer Mark Effron of the School of Communication and Media.
