Application Process for International Students

Who is an International Student Applicant?

An international student applicant is someone who requires an F-1 student visa to enter the United States or is currently studying in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa. More information on obtaining a visa and additional services for international students can be found through our Office of International Services.

Freshmen

International Student Application Requirements

In order to be considered for admission to Montclair State University as an international student applicant, you must submit:

Step 1
Online Application

Submit your application online, and make sure to choose the international student application type.

Step 2
TOEFL Test Scores

A TOEFL score of at least an 80 on the Internet-based test, a 213 on the computer-based test or a 550 on the paper-based test. (NOTE: The TOEFL requirement is only waived if you are a native English speaker or have completed a college-level English Composition course in the U.S. with a grade of “C” or better.) A score of 6.5 or better on the IELTS is also acceptable.

Step 3
Academic Evaluation and Translation

An academic evaluation and English translation of all coursework completed in another country. For potential freshmen, this is high school equivalent work. For potential transfer students, this is a course-by-course evaluation of college-level work.

The evaluation must come from an organization affiliated with the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). For a listing of NACES member organizations, please visit www.naces.org/members.htm

Step 4
Personal statement and Resume/List of Co-Curricular Activities

Complete and upload your Essay/Personal Statement. You will find the prompt by clicking “Apply Online & View Applications” on your Montclair State Account after submitting your application, then clicking “view” under Supplemental Items. This is also where you will be able to upload your essay directly to our system.

If you wish to submit a resume of list of extracurricular activities you’ve participated in for review, you should upload it as one document with your essay to your Montclair State account.

Freshmen Prompt:

Explain your reasons for seeking admission to Montclair State University, including what you believe are your academic strengths and interests. Be sure to explain any situations that may have had an impact, either positively or negatively, on your academic record. Students interested in sending a resume of extracurricular activities, volunteer work, internships, etc. can include it in the same document as their essay.

Recommendation Letter

Submit at least one recommendation letter from a guidance counselor or teacher.

The high school transcript requirement is waived for applicants who have completed or will have completed an associate’s degree. (Students with fewer than 30 completed college credits may also submit SAT and/or ACT scores. Students submitting ACT scores, only, must also have taken the optional writing portion or the scores will be deemed incomplete for the purpose of making an admissions decision.)

Personal Statement

Complete and upload your Essay/Personal Statement. This is also where you will be able to upload your essay directly to our system.

Transfer Student Prompt:

Please provide a brief description of your educational goals. Be sure to explain any discrepancies that may be reflected on your transcript.

Additionally, if you are applying for any of the programs in the College of the Arts – Fine Arts, Music, Theatre, Dance, Communication Studies, Filmmaking or Television and Digital Media – you are required to complete an interview, audition or portfolio review in order to be considered for admission into these programs. If you are applying for Fashion Studies, Art History or Theatre Studies, no interview, audition or portfolio review is required.

International Student Admission Standards

International students should have academic preparation as indicated in the freshman and transfer student admissions standards. In addition, demonstrated English language competency is required for admission.
