The George Segal Gallery enthusiastically presents Between Here and Then: Photography from the Collections of Montclair State University, on view from September 8th through December 17th, 2016. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 8th, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This exhibition, guest curated by Mimi Weinberg, who teaches Art History and Theory at Montclair State University and Stern College of Yeshiva University, highlights important photographic works in the University’s permanent collections. These collections include more than a dozen color Polaroids, as well as a series of black and white photographs, by Andy Warhol. The exhibit also features photographs by Donald Lokuta that capture George Segal in the process of casting his models for his famous Street Crossing installation, permanently on display at Montclair State University.

Weinberg’s vision for the exhibition examines photography through a “phenomenological mode of viewing” and divides the work into four sections: Snapshots, functioning as visual diary entries; Sketches, photos implicated in the process of creating something else; Documents of objects and rituals; and Pictures, in which the images enhance the depicted subjects and are the ends in and of themselves.

A related special event, All That Jazz: Art/Philosophy/Action, will be held on Thursday, November 3rd from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the George Segal Gallery, moderated by guest curator, Mimi Weinberg, and featuring speakers and surprises.

Admission to the event is $25.00 per person, which includes an exhibition catalog and coffee; pay at the door. Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 1st by calling 973-655-6941. The event is free to Montclair State University students with valid ID.

The George Segal Gallery is located on the 4th floor of the Red Hawk Parking Deck, adjacent to the Kasser Theater. Gallery hours are from 11:00am-6:00pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and from 12:30-7:30pm on Thursdays. The Gallery is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Entrance is free.
