AcademyHealth has recently named Ijeoma Opara, a Doctoral student and research fellow of the Department of Family & Child Studies, as one of 10 Population Health Scholars. Academy Health is a national organization focused on health services and policy research. An advisory committee comprised of leaders in various health policy fields chaired the competitive process to choose the 10 scholars.

The Population Health Scholarship brings emerging community health leaders to a policy program in Washington D.C. Opara’s research fellowship is under Paterson Coalition Against Substance Abuse and Project C.O.P.E. (Community Organizing for Prevention and Empowerment), two federally funded programs. Her research, with a faculty member at Montclair State University, also focuses on reducing substance abuse and HIV/AIDS risk among ethnic minorities as well as health outcomes for African American Women living with HIV/AIDS.
