Dr. Maria Cioè-Peña, Assistant Professor in the Teaching and Learning Department, recently received the 2020 Bilingual Education Research (BER) Sig 3rd Place Outstanding Dissertation Award from the BER leadership team and the Outstanding Dissertation committee at the American Educational Research Association (AERA). They felt her original and rigorous research will surely make an impact on the field; and were eager to honor her work.

Dr. Cioè-Peña’s dissertation is titled, “Yo Soy Su Mama”: Latinx Mothers Raising Emergent Bilinguals Labeled as Dis/abled, and her research focuses on the experiences of mothers of emergent bilingual children who are also classified as having a disability. She primarily focused on the ways in which school designated labels impact maternal agency and parental involvement.
This is the second award her dissertation has received; the first award was by the National Association for Bilingual Education in 2019.
