Dr. Stephanie Silvera, Professor in the Public Health Department, told NJ.com that it is unknown how long social distancing due to COVID-19 will last, but it will most likely be the norm for months rather than weeks. She stated, “I have some concerns about our capability of sustaining for such a long time,” Silvera said.

Additionally, “It’s also unknown, Silvera said, if people who contract COVID-19 and recover gain a long-term immunity — which could potentially allow them to return to work. While we know some people who contract the virus don’t show symptoms, it’s not known if those people could be carriers of the disease, unwittingly spreading it to others.

For social distancing to be effective, people need to participate. But Silvera points out that this is an unprecedented situation. Time will tell how cooperative people will be after locking themselves indoors for weeks and with no end in sight.”
